OPEC+ Set to Pause Output Hikes Through Q4 2026

OPEC+ is widely expected to pause further output increases through the fourth quarter of 2026 when it meets on September 6, following seven member nations wrapping up a 188,000 barrel-per-day supply addition for September.

The pause comes at a delicate moment: crude prices are already elevated and volatile on US-Iran tensions, and adding more supply into a market already jittery about geopolitical risk could send mixed signals about the group’s read on demand. Most analysts expect the group to use the pause to prep its 2027 capacity assessment rather than make any dramatic supply moves right now.

This is a notable shift in tone from earlier in the year, when OPEC+ was steadily unwinding production cuts to claw back market share. The current environment — with Brent up 9% in a single week and geopolitical risk premium dominating price action — makes the calculus different: too much extra supply right now could look tone-deaf if prices later crash on a de-escalation, while too little risks leaving money on the table during a genuine supply-shock rally.

Complicating the picture further, the IEA has sharply cut its global oil demand outlook, now forecasting a 2.5 million-barrel-a-day contraction in 2026 — even as the EIA raised its 2027 US crude production forecast to 14.3 million barrels a day. The group’s Q4 decision will need to navigate that same tension between weakening demand signals and a supply picture clouded by conflict.
