State Bank of India (SBI) reported a stronger September-quarter profit as lending growth, improving margins and a stake-sale gain lifted the headline result. The lender also outlined a heightened cybersecurity focus following a reported customer-data breach, putting earnings performance and digital resilience in the same day’s financial spotlight.

SBI’s Q2 FY27 headline numbers

For the quarter ended 30 September, SBI reported net profit of ₹23,038 crore, up 14.28% year-on-year. Net interest income was ₹49,143 crore, up 14.69% from a year earlier, according to the bank’s reported results.

Reuters reported that gross loans grew by nearly 18% and deposits by 12.3%. The bank’s domestic net interest margin was 3.11%, up 11 basis points from the preceding quarter. Its gross non-performing-assets ratio improved to 1.39%, from 1.47% three months earlier.

A one-time gain matters to the profit mix

The reported quarterly profit includes a one-time gain from SBI’s sale of a 6% stake in SBI Funds Management. Reuters put that gain at ₹7,288 crore. That does not alter the reported profit figure, but it is important context when readers compare this quarter with ordinary operating performance.

Cybersecurity response after reported breach

Reuters reported that SBI said last month that 3,897 customer records containing sensitive data had been leaked on the dark web. In the same report, SBI chairman C. S. Setty said the bank was working with the industry on a controlled testing environment to assess artificial-intelligence models and potential threats.

The cybersecurity comments should be read separately from the quarter’s financial measures: one addresses operational resilience, while the other describes performance during the three months ended 30 September.

Why the story matters

SBI is India’s largest lender, so its results are closely watched for signals on credit demand, deposit mobilisation, margins and asset quality. The addition of a cybersecurity response makes this more than a routine earnings update: it links a systemically important bank’s financial performance with the protection of its digital operations and customer information.
