In a significant achievement, India’s non-fossil fuel capacity reached an impressive 266.78 gigawatts in 2025. This represents a 22.6 percent increase from the previous year, highlighting the country’s commitment to becoming a leader in renewable energy expansion. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced this remarkable milestone recently, emphasizing the nation’s shift towards clean energy and sustainable practices.

Historic Growth in Clean Energy

During 2025, India added a phenomenal 49.12 gigawatts of new clean energy capacity, marking the highest annual increase in the country’s history. Solar power spearheaded this growth, with its installed capacity soaring from 97.86 gigawatts to 135.81 gigawatts—a staggering 38.8 percent year-on-year growth. This shift not only signifies progress but also reflects the country’s strategic approach toward harnessing renewable energy resources efficiently.

The Path to 2030 Goals

The expansion of India’s renewable energy capacity is essential as the country races toward its 2030 target of 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity. This goal is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
